APC Players to resume playing, even without contract-renewal

Armed Police Club (APC) has been facing some confusion in the on-going one-day Prime Minister Cricket Cup regarding contract renewal with its players. But the dilemma has been resolved for now and the players will continue playing in the tournament. However the start players Basanta Regmi and Shakti Gauchan will remain unavailable to play the group level matches.

Although the process of signing contracts was complete in the month of Baisakh itself, APC’s decision to not renew its contracts had its players in an undecided state.  The APC team management invited its players for a meeting and put forth a new proposal which stated that the players do not need to continue for APC if they did not want to compete in the tournament.

APC proposed that its players would be provided with match fees but would not have contracts that allow paying the players in a monthly basis. The players decided to not reject playing the Prime Minister Cup.

However Basanta Regmi and Shakti Gauchan have decided not to play at group level of the Prime Minister tournament as the team-APC did not budge on its decision to cancel the renewal of the contracts. Basanta, who had flown in from Bhairahawa for the tournament three days ago, changed his mind about playing the tournament and returned to Bhairahawa again. After much request from his team mates, he has promised to join the team if and when the team reaches the semi final stage of the completion. Similarly, Shakti has also informed that he would be unavailable for the initial group-level matches of the competition.

APC’s management is reported to spend 70 lakhs rupees per annum on its players as per the contracts. The team has an internal budget of 65 lakhs, from which it organizes Krishna Mohan Memorial Badminton, Sahaveer Memorial Open lawn tennis, and women volleyball, etc. This has put tremendous financial pressure on the team’s management, who is looking for ways to pay for its contract-bound cricket players.
